Hummus

I have been making this recipe for hummus for at least five years.  We love it.  It is quick and easy to make home made hummus from scratch and is super flavorful.  It is also fairly healthy as snacks go, and can be made in a matter of minutes.

Typically, you would use your food processor or blender to chop and mix the ingredients.  While gathering the ingredients and utensils, I realized that in the past, we always lived in a place like a community house, or a camp with a big kitchen that had a processor to borrow nearby.  I thought for a minute and then pulled out my immersion blender.

…And it was a little bit of a problem.  After picking chick pea bits out of my hair, I fashioned this hood out of a gallon sized zip-lock bag.  It worked pretty well!

We hope you enjoy this simple, inexpensive recipe.  We like to dip slices of pita bread or fresh veggies.

Hummus Recipe:

  • 1 16 oz can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans
  • 1/4 cup liquid from can of chickpeas
  • 3-5 tablespoons lemon juice (depending on taste)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons tahini*
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
*Tahini makes the hummus taste better, but you can do without it.
Preparation:
Drain chickpeas and set aside liquid from can. Combine remaining ingredients in blender or food processor. Add 1/4 cup of liquid from chickpeas. Blend for 3-5 minutes on low until thoroughly mixed and smooth.
Place in serving bowl, and enjoy.

Read an article today about Virginia trying to grow chickpeas since hummus is growing in popularity, and I wondered how to make it. Perfect timing. thanks.
