New Arrivals

On Sunday we were glad to welcome a new addition to the farm.  We knew Number 3 was going to have her calf soon.  She had been showing signs for almost two weeks.  When we got home from church there she was with her brand new bull calf.

As you can see, the calf is a little more concerned with his breakfast than being photogenic.

It has been a funny spring for calving.  The heat last summer really had a big effect on breeding.  Sometimes the cows don’t get pregnant when it is that hot, so we have been watching to see how many of our cows we think might not have a calf this year.  Right now we still have three cows that we aren’t sure about.

Our young heifer (Number 9) that is at Dad’s place also had her calf this week.  (We will post a picture of that one soon.)  He is a bull calf also.  He is black with a white face and has a spot over one eye.  The young cow is a good mama.  We just happened to be over there the other night when she went into labor.  It’s always a little nerve racking when a cow has her first calf.   We watched her for about two hours, wondering if we were going to have to assist her.  We were getting close to calling the vet when we went out to check her once more and saw the little guy laying next to his mama.
